Hydrogen sulfide is formed by a process in which groundwater passes through rock and soil, dissolving sulfur compounds they contain. Naturally occurring sulfur- and sulfate-reducing bacteria metabolise these compounds in an anaerobic environment, yielding hydrogen sulfide. This then emanates from the water as a gas, creating a foul smell.
Iron compounds enter the aquifer in a similar ways, dissolving into the groundwater as is passes through rock and soil. Ferrous iron forms in an anaerobic environment, such as underground. It is clear until it is exposed to oxygen, which reacts with it to form ferric iron. This is the form that leads to staining.
The patented IRONpro OXI system uses pressurized air injection. Oxygen introduced by this pressurized air injection interacts with dissolved sulphur and iron compounds, forming insoluble compounds the precipitate out of the water. These sulphur and iron compounds are filtered out by the media bed, which contains a dense mineral substance twice as heavy as sand.
